Verbs
My apartment television was tuned into the Ellen Degeneres show yesterday. As I worked diligently on something else, I overheard Ellen introducing her new “Laugh, Dance, Vote” campaign.
I am here to say, enough is enough. We don’t need anymore triple verb combinations. Ellen has officially pushed them into the “overdone” category of social trends.
I am not really sure where this trend came from. If I had to point blame, I’d say it was the best-selling Eat, Pray, Love book. I think this book has something to do with trying new things, traveling and eating pasta. Three things I was doing when I first encountered the triple-verb.
It was 2007, staying at a hostel in Munich. One of the girls at the hostel was showing off her new tattoo to all the 20-somethings in the area. It said “Live, Laugh, Love.”
By the time I got back to the States, the verb triptych had infected the populace. If it had ended at Eat, Pray, Love, I think I’d be okay with it. But now it has spawned far too many spin offs.
This was made abundantly clear to me when the theme for my school’s leadership this year was “Learn, Love, Lead.” Now I have one more shirt to always wear inside-out.
Listen people, adopting three actions as a philosophy of life is just silliness.
Unless you’re a baby.
Don’t forget that this year during the Pride Fest the theme was Live, Love, Be. (I think)
